MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – Attorney Gregory J. Stenmoe is the new president and managing partner of Briggs and Morgan P.A. – one of the top five largest law firms in Minneapolis – effective Jan. 1, 2016. He succeeds attorney Sam Hanson, who has held the post since 2013.

A respected employment law attorney, Stenmoe was most recently chair of the firm’s Litigation department – a position that installed him as a member of the firm's management committee from 2012 to 2015. He also formerly served the firm on the board of directors as vice president and treasurer of the firm.

Stenmoe will continue to practice in the areas of employment-law counseling and litigation in addition to his new role as president and managing partner.

Similarly, Hanson also will continue to practice law at the firm in the areas of arbitration and mediation, complex civil litigation, appellate law and public utility regulation. He joined the firm in 1966 and was appointed to the Minnesota Court of Appeals in 2000. After serving on the Court of Appeals for two years, and the Minnesota Supreme Court for five years, he rejoined Briggs and Morgan. He served on the board of directors from 2010 to 2012 before stepping into the role of president and managing partner in 2013. Hanson also held the position of president and managing partner from 1988 to 1993.

“It is an honor and privilege to serve Briggs in this new role,” said Stenmoe. “Sam has led the firm to a solid position in the legal marketplace and I plan to build on that success.”

Serving alongside Stenmoe on the firm’s management committee are the chairs of Briggs’ Litigation and Commercial departments – Lauren E. Lonergan and Michael J. McEllistrem, respectively.

Lonergan, a long-time Briggs attorney practices in the areas of insurance-coverage, employment, business and food-related litigation. She is a member of the firm’s board of directors and succeeds Stenmoe as chair of the Litigation department.

McEllistrem, also a member of the firm’s board of directors, primarily represents closely held corporations and family businesses in mergers and acquisitions, and general corporate and commercial law matters.

Previously Briggs announced Steven J. Ryan was elected chair of the firm and Ann Rainhart was hired for the newly created role of executive director. The chair of the firm and the executive director roles support the management committee in leading the firm.
