When asked what skill was most important for him in becoming a rainmaker, McEllistrem responded, “The ability to recognize, early on in my career, the need to develop a good relationship with second-level personnel at clients. Controllers become CFOs; contract administrators/paralegals become general counsel; division managers make it to the C level. This natural evolution in the management of a company can work for you or against you — and by making the long-term investment in these relationships; you acquire and maintain the trust and confidence of these people as they move into new key roles.”
