Kodi Verhalen Receives Prestigious National Award from the American Bar AssociationPrint PDFShare
MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – Briggs and Morgan shareholder Kodi Verhalen has been named an On the Rise: Top 40 Young Lawyer by the American Bar Association. The annual award nationally recognizes only 40 ABA young lawyer members across the country who are under the age of 36 or admitted to practice for five years or less, and exemplify a broad range of high achievement, innovation, vision, leadership, and legal and community service.
Verhalen is a member of the firm’s Energy section, representing and counseling clients in the areas of energy and the environment. She is also licensed as a professional engineer in Minnesota and is the immediate past president of the National Society of Professional Engineers, a 31,000-member organization. She was the youngest person, and the third woman, in the organization’s history to hold the office of president.
Verhalen mentors engineering and part-time law students. She uses these opportunities to provide support and encouragement to women in these fields. During her tenure as president of the National Society of Professional Engineers, Verhalen played a key role in several efforts, including initiating a task force to evaluate the future of professional engineering, requesting staff to focus an early 2017 issue of the organization’s publication, PE magazine, addressing issues of racial and gender bias in the workplace, and moderating a panel at the National Academy of Engineering on the ethics of autonomous vehicle deployment. Each of these efforts spurred thoughtful and important dialogue, shining a light on important issues to the professional engineering community.
“It is an honor to be included with such a remarkable group of attorneys,” stated Verhalen. “In looking at the attorneys the ABA has recognized this year as its 40 On the Rise, the future of the legal profession looks very bright based on the diversity in experience, practice, and passion for advocacy of this year’s honorees.”
