Briggs and Morgan shareholders Mike Lafeber and Karen McDaniel will present at the 2014 Midwest IP Institute on Friday, Sept. 19 at the Minnesota CLE Conference Center. The two will be presenting on, “Assessing the Best Strategy When Confronted by a Patent Troll.” The session will offer practical tips and suggestions for managing the day when your company is confronted by a patent troll. They will identify and discuss response options, outline “best approaches” and use short hypotheticals to illustrate the application of those principals. The Midwest IP Institute is the premier Twin Cities IP seminar, drawing both in-house and outside counsel for comprehensive coverage of the intellectual property law landscape.

Lafeber is co-chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Section and specializes in defending and maximizing the value of his clients’ intellectual property. He has litigated more than 100 IP related matters in the United States District Court, including 31 patent infringement matters, 75 trademark infringement matters and 13 copyright infringement matters. Lafeber has also handled more than 40 contested proceedings filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

McDaniel is also co-chair of the Intellectual Property Section and has spent the last 25 years helping clients enforce and defend their intellectual property rights. A veteran of more than 50 lawsuits involving IP, she has been entrusted with matters of significant economic impact to her clients. In addition to managing active lawsuits, McDaniel also works with clients to craft overall IP strategy, conducts pre-suit analyses to determine go/no go litigation decisions and engages in litigation avoidance counseling.
