Briggs and Morgan, P.A. is pleased to announce that Minnesota Lawyer has named shareholders Julie Firestone and Daniel Supalla as 2014 “Attorneys of the Year,” an honor widely recognized and respected by the Twin Cities legal community. Firestone and Supalla are being honored for their significant pro bono work with asylum cases referred by the Advocates for Human Rights, as well as other pro bono contributions, including Supalla’s work on appeals from the Public Defender’s office and Firestone’s work before the Minnesota Supreme Court on behalf of a vulnerable child who had his benefits cut.

Firestone is a member of the firm’s Business Litigation Section and Financial Markets Group. She represents investment firms, broker-dealers, insurance companies, issuers of securities, registered representatives and insurance agents in class actions, regulatory proceedings, customer disputes and other adversary matters. Firestone also offers pro bono representation to disadvantaged and disabled persons who have been denied government services or been victimized in business disputes and to refugees seeking asylum in the United States.

Supalla is a member of the firm’s Financial Markets and Appellate Practice Groups. He primarily represents broker-dealers involved in arbitrated and legal disputes with customers, registered representatives and other broker-dealers. Combining his appellate practice and pro bono work, Supalla has briefed and argued cases before the Minnesota Court of Appeals and the Minnesota Supreme Court, where he argued that an accused has a Sixth Amendment right to the assistance of counsel to present closing arguments in criminal bench trials.
