MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – Briggs and Morgan, P.A. is pleased to announce that Scott M. Flaherty, a shareholder in the firm’s intellectual property section, has been named an Up & Coming Attorney for 2016 by Minnesota Lawyer. The annual listing honors lawyers who distinguish themselves in their first 10 years of practice through professional accomplishment, leadership and service to the community and the legal profession, chosen by an outside expert panel of past honorees.
Flaherty’s successful practice ranges from protecting intellectual property, solving complex commercial disputes and defending persons accused of crimes. He represents clients accused of or investigated for defamation, perjury, various computer crimes, mortgage fraud and Medicaid fraud. He has argued four cases to the Minnesota Supreme Court and many more to the Minnesota Court of Appeals. Flaherty led the Briggs team that defended the alleged organizer of the December 2014 Black Lives Matter / Mall of America demonstration against eight different criminal charges. The court granted the team’s motion to dismiss in a 137-page order.
Within the Twin Cities, Flaherty serves on boards of directors of organizations dedicated to providing equal access to legal services for minorities. He served a three-year term on the Minneapolis Civil Rights Commission, including one year as the Commission’s chair. Flaherty currently serves on the boards of the Hallie Q. Brown Foundation and the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota. Within the firm, Scott co-chairs Briggs’ Diversity Committee and is a member of its Recruiting Committee.
"I am honored to be named an Up & Coming Attorney by Minnesota Lawyer," said Flaherty. “I have been fortunate to work with outstanding attorneys, clients and professionals in my career, and I look forward to many more years of serving the firm’s clients.”
