Briggs Attorneys Recognized for Pro Bono Service to Ramsey County Mental Health CourtPrint PDFShare
MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The Ramsey County District Court has recognized Briggs attorneys Erin Altman, Knapp Fitzsimmons, Scott Flaherty, Ben Gurstelle, Amarachi Ihejirika, Bryce Jasper, Cyrus Malek, Lauren Pockl, and Kathryn Short for their pro bono work at Ramsey County Mental Health Court. Briggs attorneys provide pro bono representation to Mental Health Court participants at court sessions, which are held a few times each month.
Mental Health Court is a specialized “diversionary” court program for criminal defendants with diagnosed mental illness. As an alternative to conventional sentencing, these defendants receive intensive court-supervised services to help them work through mental health or chemical dependency issues. Mental Health Court and other diversionary courts have been recognized around the country for their effectiveness in reducing recidivism rates and helping break the “revolving-door” of the justice system.
Mental Health Court recently held its First Annual Coffee for program graduates and volunteers. At that event, Ramsey County Judge Mark Ireland recognized Briggs for its years of service to Mental Health Court and thanked the attorneys who have been volunteering over the last several years. Briggs is proud of its longstanding service to this important program.
