Briggs Promotes Three as Shareholders

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. (August 27, 2010) – Briggs and Morgan, Professional Association announces the election of three new shareholders: Jonathan P. Schmidt, Molly Borg Thornton and Matthew D. Tomback. The three were formerly associates with the firm.

Jonathan P. Schmidt is a member of the Business Litigation Section and Appellate Practice Group, and represents clients in the Minnesota Court of Appeals and Supreme Court, the Supreme Courts of North Dakota and Wisconsin, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th, 8th and 10th circuits. He also works on appeals involving issues which include constitutional law, federal preemption, tort and mass tort liability, employment law, trade secrets, business contracts, insurance law, environmental law, and partnership law. Jon received his B.A. in English literature from the University of Minnesota and his law degree magna cum laude from the William Mitchell College of Law. Jon has been named a "Rising Star" by Minnesota Law & Politics and was named an "Up and Coming Attorney" by Minnesota Lawyer. Prior to joining Briggs in 2005, Jon clerked at the Minnesota Court of Appeals for Judge Natalie Hudson and at the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals for Judge Myron Bright.

Molly Borg Thornton is  a member of the Business Litigation Section and has a diversified practice that includes general business litigation matters as well as complex litigation, including disputes between regulatory agencies and businesses. She also consults and assists clients on personal injury and property damage disputes. Her experience primarily consists of defense litigation in federal court in the District of Minnesota, which has involved notable contract, employment, railroad, mortgage banking and intellectual property litigation. Molly received her B.A. magna cum laude in business management and Spanish from the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota and her law degree summa cum laude from William Mitchell College of Law. Molly has been named a "Rising Star" by Minnesota Law & Politics and was named an "Up and Coming Attorney" by Minnesota Lawyer. Before joining Briggs in 2005, Molly clerked for Judge Paul A. Magnuson in the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota.

Matthew D. Tomback is a member of the Financial Institutions and Real Estate Section, and the Bankruptcy Practice Group. He has extensive experience handling complex commercial finance and real estate matters on behalf of corporate clients. Matt represents banks, investors and other financial institutions in structuring, negotiating and documenting a variety of commercial finance transactions, including real estate loans, asset-based lending, and mezzanine financing. He also practices in the area of commercial real estate and leasing. He received his B.A. in political science from the University of Michigan and his law degree from Fordham University School of Law. Prior to private practice, Matt served as in-house counsel for an international real estate brokerage and property management company based in New York. Matt joined Briggs in 2008.
