MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – (June 11, 2014) – Briggs and Morgan, Professional Association, today announced that Brian Wenger has accepted the position of executive vice president and chief legal officer for Optum, a division of Minnetonka-based UnitedHealth Group. He will lead legal efforts across the division, as well as participate in strategic initiatives at both Optum and at the enterprise level for UnitedHealth Group.
The board at Briggs and Morgan views a departure such as this—and others like it—as creating opportunities for deeper connections with top companies in the Twin Cities. In addition to UnitedHealth Group, during the last two years the firm has had its attorneys recruited by the likes of Cargill, Land O’ Lakes, Medtronic and US Bank.
“We take it as the highest compliment when our lawyers are tapped for such top positions—it’s a testament to the strategic work we do here for our clients, the results we achieve and the caliber of all our lawyers,” said Sam Hanson, managing partner for Briggs and Morgan. “And, while we’ll miss Brian, his departure provides many fine and experienced attorneys the opportunity to have a lead role both at the firm and with important clients with whom they have worked for years.”
Wenger has been with Briggs and Morgan since 1988, serving a broad range of regional and national clients in corporate matters with a concentration in complex business and commercial transactions, joint ventures and mergers. He has served as chair of the firm since 2011 and previously was chair of the commercial practice. Brian has honed an interdisciplinary approach to his work that engages expertise in finance, intellectual property, contracts, taxation, employee relations, health care, corporate strategy and governance issues.
“It was an extremely difficult decision to leave,” said Brian Wenger. “I don’t believe, after 26 years at Briggs and Morgan, that I could have had a more rewarding career anywhere else. I feel I’m leaving the firm in a great place, with a very solid foundation for its future success. I am excited to watch the firm grow and flourish.”
