Seven Associates Join Briggs and Morgan

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – Briggs and Morgan is pleased to announce the addition of seven associates who join the firm’s litigation, corporate, banking and real estate practices: John R. Brennan, Tara Reese Duginske, Melitta George, Shannon E. Gherty, Michael W. Kaphing, Jessica J. Stomski and Aaron G. Thomas.

John R. Brennan is a member of the firm’s financial institutions and real estate section and practices principally in the areas of banking and finance, commercial lending, and asset-based lending. He is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA) and the American Bar Association (ABA). John received a B.S. in finance, and later an M.B.A., from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. He received his J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School.

Tara Reese Duginske is a member of the firm’s business litigation section. She is a member of Minnesota Women Lawyers. Tara received her B.S. with highest honors in social work from Metropolitan State University. She graduated magna cum laude from William Mitchell College of Law. In 2008, she represented William Mitchell in the New York Bar Association’s National Moot Court Competition, winning the regional competition and advancing to the final rounds in New York City. Tara received the Best Brief Award and was named a “top 10 oral advocate” in the competition. During law school, she was an extern for the Honorable Paul A. Magnuson in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota.

Melitta George is a member of the business law section, practicing general corporate law. She is a member of the board of directors for the Minnesota chapter of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, as well as Minnesota Women Lawyers. Melitta graduated cum laude from William Mitchell College of Law. While in law school, she served on the board of directors for the National Asian Pacific American Law Students Association. She externed for the Honorable Kevin S. Burke of the Hennepin County District Court during the 2007-08 school year. Melitta received a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from the University of Kansas and a Master of Philosophy degree in music from the University of Birmingham, England.

Shannon E. Gherty is a member of the firm’s financial institutions and real estate section, and practices principally in commercial real estate and leasing, banking and finance, and commercial lending. Prior to law school, she was employed as a business analyst for Target Corporation. Shannon received her B.A. magna cum laude from Boston College, where she graduated from the communications honors program. She received her law degree cum laude from the University of St. Thomas School of Law, where she served as managing editor of the law review, Fides et Iustitia. In the community, Shannon chairs the steering committee of CURE, the American Cancer Society's primary young professional fund-raising group in the Twin Cities.

Michael W. Kaphing joins the firm’s business litigation section. Mike received his B.A in legal studies and political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received his J.D magna cum laude from Hamline University School of Law, where he was on the Dean’s List and earned three CALI awards for achieving the highest grade in his class. In 2007, Mike received an award for Outstanding Achievement in Labor Law from the Labor and Employment Law Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association. During law school, he worked as a law clerk in the corporate legal department of a Fortune 500 gas and electric utility company.

Jessica J. Stomski joins the firm’s business litigation section and financial markets group. She is a member of Minnesota Women Lawyers. Jessica received her B.A. from the University of Wisconsin - Madison, majoring in journalism. She received her J.D. cum laude from William Mitchell College of Law. During law school, she co-chaired William Mitchell’s Native American Law Student’s Association, and was a student bar association section representative.

Aaron G. Thomas joins the firm’s business litigation section. He received his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame. He received his law degree summa cum laude from William Mitchell College of Law, where he was an assistant editor for the William Mitchell Law Review and an executive editor for theJournal of the National Security Forum . During law school, Aaron was champion of the William Mitchell Corporate Appellate Moot Court Competition, a national quarter-finalist in the Ruby R. Vale Inter-School Moot Court Competition, a Burton Legal Writing Award nominee for best motion practice memorandum and a research assistant to Professor A. John Radsan.
