Michael is based in Briggs and Morgan's Minneapolis office, and practices principally in the areas of:

  • Employment litigation
  • Employment counseling and advice
  • Labor arbitration
  • Business litigation
  • Education law

Michael has represented clients in federal and state courts with respect to a wide variety of matters such as discrimination, harassment, accommodation of disabilities, enforcement of non-compete agreements and negligence claims. In his first jury trial, Michael obtained a jury verdict in favor of his client for over $400,000.00 in damages for violations of constitutional rights.

Michael regularly advises and counsels employers on complex matters, such as compliance with the Workers Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and wage and hour issues under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). In addition, Michael has advised educational institutions on compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act, students’ constitutional rights and accommodation of disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Michael was named "Attorney of the Year" by Minnesota Lawyer in 2010. He also received a Distinguished Pro Bono Service Award from Chief Judge Michael J. Davis of the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota. Michael is a contributing author to Briggs and Morgan’s employment law blog, Minnesota Employer.

Michael is a member of the Minnesota State and the Federal bar associations. He is admitted to practice in Minnesota, the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.

Michael received his B.A. summa cum laude from Augsburg College, majoring in philosophy. He received his J.D. with distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law, where he wrote for the Iowa Law Review. He joined Briggs in 2007.
