Michael D. Gordon

Associate; Financial Institutions and Real Estate

Mike is an associate in the firm of Briggs and Morgan, Professional Association. He is based in our Minneapolis office and is a member of the Financial Institutions and Real Estate Section. He practices principally in the areas of:

  • Asset-based lending
  • Traditional commercial lending
  • Syndicated credit facilities
  • Creditors’ rights and remedies
  • Defaulted loans and workouts
  • Bankruptcy
  • Commercial real estate lending
  • Uniform Commercial Code law
  • Banking law and regulation

Mike protects the interests of banks and other lenders in structuring, negotiating, documenting and, when necessary, the workout of traditional and asset-based loan transactions, syndicated credit facilities, franchise finance transactions, and construction and permanent real estate loan transactions. He has substantial experience in all of these areas representing national banks, large regional institutions and smaller niche lenders. In addition to representing lenders in commercial finance transactions and workouts, Mike also works extensively with creditors in connection with Chapter 7 and Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings by customers and/or tenants. His creditor clients typically include real estate developers, property managers, utility companies and manufacturers.

Among Mike’s representative transactions, he has acted as:

  • Agent’s counsel in $60 million secured syndicated revolving, term and real estate loan facility to a wire manufacturer;
  • Counsel for large regional lender in connection with $115 million real estate workout involving over 30 properties in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, Kansas and Florida
  • Counsel for large regional lender in connection with $15 million real estate workout involving residential development company;
  • Lender’s counsel in $10 million secured loan facility to equipment finance company;
  • Counsel for large utility provider in connection with a $500,000 preference complaint in bankruptcy of national food distributor; and
  • Lender’s counsel in a $10 million secured revolving loan facility to seafood distributor.

Mike is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin. He is a member of the Minnesota State, Hennepin County and Wisconsin State Bar associations. Mike is also a member of Turnaround Management Association and the American Bankruptcy Institute, and is a contributor to the quarterly Bankruptcy Bulletin published by the Bankruptcy Section of the Hennepin County Bar Association.

Mike received his B.A in political science from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He received his law degree cum laude from University of Wisconsin Law School. Mike joined Briggs in 2002.
