Jessica J. Stomski

Jessie is based in the firm’s Minneapolis office and is a member of the Business Litigation Section and Financial Markets Group. She practices principally in the areas of:

  • Business litigation
  • Securities litigation
  • State and federal appeals 
  • Class action defense
  • Financial institutions defense

Jessie also represents clients involved in employment disputes, including unemployment compensation, arbitration and litigation disputes. Jessie’s recent representative cases include:

  • representation of a national broker dealer before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in dispute arising over predispute arbitration provision in client agreement;
  • obtaining a respondent’s award in FINRA arbitration for a national broker dealer against a seven-figure claim brought by an investor who claimed unauthorized and unsuitable trading;
  • defense of a broker dealer in 250+ related arbitrations, state litigation, federal class action litigation and bankruptcy litigation arising out of one of the nation’s then-largest Ponzi schemes;
  • defense of a national class action involving more than 70,000 class members who purchased variable annuities with responsibility for settlement drafting and class action administration;
  • representation of a Minnesota county in property tax litigation in federal court that raised issues of 11th Amendment immunity, availability of tax refunds and questions of federal exemptions from state taxes;
  • defense of claims arising out of a take-or-pay contract, with primary responsibility for addressing issues of contract enforceability and interpretation, regulatory interplay and personal jurisdiction over alien corporations;
  • representation of a married couple in a Minnesota state court trial seeking recovery of interest and costs from their former income tax preparer whose professional negligence led to an IRS audit;
  • coordination of sales-practice litigation across the U.S. for a national insurance company.

Jessie has co-authored numerous articles, including the preparation of white papers on securities arbitration, the impact of significant supreme court cases, federal litigation and advocacy. She is a member of Minnesota Women Lawyers, the Native American Bar Association and the Minnesota state and federal bar associations. She is admitted to practice in Minnesota state and federal courts and before the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota and the District of Nebraska.

Jessie received her B.A. in journalism from the University of Wisconsin. She received her J.D. cum laude from William Mitchell College of Law. During law school she co-chaired William Mitchell’s Native American Law Student Association and was a student bar association section representative. Jessie also was a semi-finalist at the NALSA National Moot Court Competition. She joined Briggs in 2008.
