Charles R. Haynor

Director; Shareholder; Financial Institutions and Real Estate

Chuck is a shareholder and director in the firm of Briggs and Morgan, Professional Association. He practices within the Financial Institutions and Real Estate Section.

Chuck previously served two separate, three-year terms on Briggs’ board of directors and has served as head of the Financial Institutions and Real Estate Section for more than 15 years. He was also a member of the firm’s three-person Executive Committee. He practices primarily in the areas of real estate, banking, creditors’ rights and commercial law.

He has extensive experience representing banks, insurance companies and other financial institutions. For more than 30 years, Chuck has represented clients in negotiating and documenting a variety of sophisticated commercial and real estate financing transactions, including revolving credit facilities, term loans, asset-based loans, syndicated construction and permanent real estate loans. 

He has advised financial institutions and other clients in workouts and foreclosures of troubled, conventional and tax-exempt real estate financings. Chuck's regulatory expertise includes counseling lending institutions and their officers and directors on a variety of issues (e.g. Regulation O and other insider transactions, affiliate transactions, state and federal lending limit, and Bank Secrecy Act issues) and various regulatory examination and enforcement proceedings involving the local, regional and national offices of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Federal Reserve Board, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), and Office of Thrift Supervision, as well as various state regulators of financial institutions. Chuck has been counsel in a number of significant civil money penalty actions, cease and desist, removal, and suspension actions brought by supervisory agencies, as well as civil money penalty actions commenced by the U.S. Justice Department.

Chuck represents a national real estate development company and its affiliated investment partnerships and joint ventures in real estate acquisitions, financings, development, leasing and sales. Over the past several years, he has been involved in transactions totaling over $15 billion for this client.

Chuck has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America and has been selected as a "Leading American Attorney." He has also been designated a "Super Lawyer" by Minnesota Law & Politics. Chuck has also been listed in Chambers USA's America's Leading Lawyers for Business for a number of years.

Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Chuck received his B.A. from the University of Iowa with highest distinction and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law with high distinction and was elected a member of Order of the Coif. Chuck joined Briggs in 1975.
